AI Guardrails

Definition

The checks that sit around a model to constrain what reaches it and what it is allowed to do or say.

Guardrails are the controls placed around an AI model rather than inside it. They operate on the way in — validating and sanitising user input, stripping injected instructions — and on the way out, screening responses for unsafe content, leaked data, or claims the system is not permitted to make. For agentic systems they also bound actions: which tools an agent may call, what spending limits apply, and which operations require human approval before they execute. Guardrails matter because a model's own training provides no enforceable guarantee; the limits that actually hold are the ones implemented in the surrounding system.
